Creative Dr. Seuss Inspired Free Printables

Are you looking for some creative Dr. Seuss inspired free printables to celebrate Read Across America Day coming up March 2?

There is a Green Eggs and Ham sight word printable game at Mommy Lessons 101.

I also have a Green Eggs and Ham printable matching game which is also great for cutting practice.

Another popular printable here at obSEUSSed is the One Fish Two Fish placemat counting game.  This is great to play with gold fish crackers.

Another great printable for a Dr. Seuss party are these Thing 1 and Thing 2 cupcake signs.

One of my favorites are these adorable Thing 1, Thing 2 paper bag puppet printable pieces from Nicole at Momentity.  Print them and have kids color and cut them out and glue them to a paper bag.

1 Fish 2 Fish Printable Matching Game

This week we are pulling out the printable fishing game I created to go along with Dr. Seuss’ book, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, for co-op preschool at our house. We’ve used it for three years now with all of our kids and it has been a great tool to help with letter, number, shape and color recognition.


Printable Fish:
The fish printable has lower and upper case alphabet letters and a set of numbers 1-10. The last sheet has 10 blank fish.  You should print out two sets of the cards.  I printed them on different colored card stock. Then I cut one set into rectangle cards as my drawing pile. The other fish I cut out around the fish outline and added a paper clip.
You can make your own fishing rod from a popsicle stick, yarn and a round kitchen magnet. I just grabbed a cheap fishing toy set from the dollar store to get the rod.
The kids like to set a hula hoop out as their fish pond.  You could also use a laundry basket or an area rug.  They set all the fish face up in the pond.

HOW TO PLAY:
Children take turns drawing a card from the draw pile then finding a matching fish in the pond to fish out. Try only putting the lower case letters in the draw pile and have the capital letters in the fishing pond. You don’t have to have a draw pile.  I often just call out what I want them to find, like playing I Spy. I spy a 'red fish' or a 'blue fish'.





CUSTOMIZABLE: I left a few fish blank so when you print them you can add your own writing on them. We added shapes to some and the kids’ names to some. Try sight-words, rhyming words, shapes, family or class names.  Whatever you need to focus on most can be tailored to this game.

Are You My Mother? {Printable Matching Game}

To celebrate Mother's Day this week we are reading the book Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
My children giggle at the silly story line (The bird is in search of his mother. Is the cow his mother? Is the airplane his mother?). I love the repetition in this book. It helps my children feel comfortable guessing the words as they learn to read. The text is predictable and they can look at the simple illustrations for hints.
I created this worksheet so you could have children color it, then draw lines to the matches or try cutting the animals out to use as a matching game.

TO PLAY: Cut out the animals in a rectangle card shape.  I hand wrote the names of the animals on the back of the mother cards. I asked my son to turn over a blank card (with a baby animal), then he would read the words to find the matching mother.

Green Eggs and Ham Activities and Free Printable

Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss, is a great book to explore for St. Patrick’s day. Here are a few ideas to help you explore this book.

GREEN EGGS AND HAM FREE PRINTABLE
I created some free printable worksheets you can use with kids to help them with rhyming, cutting and matching. I also made some blank eggs so you can make up your own activity. Remember to print it on green paper to make your Green Eggs or you can have kids color the eggs green.

GREEN EASTER EGGS
You can also try writing rhyming words from the story on Easter eggs. Split them apart and scatter them in a basket then have kids match the top and bottom of each egg together.

Rainbow Fish Printable Sharing Activity

This Rainbow Fish printable activity goes along with the book by Marcus Pfister.

You can print the pictures below to have children color and practice sharing.  My kids really liked the sticker version.  Passing out stickers to others made them happy. They learned the message of the book from when Rainbow Fish found joy in sharing his shiny scales with others.

Oh the Thinks You Can Think Dr. Seuss Activities and App Review

“Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!,” a book originally written in 1975 by Dr. Seuss, is now an interactive book app kids can read and play on their Apple devices.



Oh, the Thinks You Can Think App Review:
My kids and I love reading the classic Dr. Seuss hardback books and now I can’t believe I can carry all the interactive books in my pocket or purse for my kids to read and play while shopping and traveling around town.  I’ve got my Dr. Seuss collection in my pocket! Instead of saying“There’s a Wocket in My Pocket,” I should say “there’s a touch in my clutch.” 

The Oh, the Thinks You Can Think omBook app has a variety of kid-friendly interactive elements. It can read to your child or your child can read it by themselves and go at their own pace. My kids, ages 5 and 7, easily flipped (swiped) through the electronic pages.

Oceanhouse Media,the creators of omBook apps, did an excellent job at keeping all of Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations. This specific story had question marks that would pop up for the kids to touch to progress the story on each page.  My kids have played with this book over and over making sure to tap each question mark causing pictures to move and pop up, and tap each picture on the page making the vocabulary word pop up. When it tells you to “think right” the question mark appears on the right encouraging the child to tap it, “think yellow” they tap the question mark and yellow birds appear.  Or my favorite, “Think about beautiful schlopp with a cherry on top” and you tap the schlopp causing a cherry to appear. How fun is that?

Get little ones excited about reading:
The great literacy connection for this story is that as your child thinks about the words, they tap the question marks to immediately see what they thought about. They make it happen. They think it, they see it. Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! 

The Oh, the Thinks You Can Think omBook app is a Seusstastic way to keep children imagining and exploring the world of Dr. Seuss while experiencing early literacy and thinking skills.

Here are a few activities I came up with to go along with Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!


Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! Free Printable Worksheet:

Personal or classroom use only. Click on picture to enlarge then right click to “Save As” to your computer. You could also copy and paste into a ‘Word’ document.

Reality vs. Imaginary Thoughts:
Have children think up something real in the first thought bubble, then something pretend in the second thought bubble. Depending on their age they can draw pictures or write words. They could make a list or fill out several worksheets.  Get them thinking. They could draw pictures from the book (i.e. Schlopp or a Rink-Rinker-Fink) or make up their own.
 

A Great After School or Classroom Snack: Beautiful Schlopp with a Cherry on Top




Super easy to make Schlopp: Apple Sauce, 1-2 drops food coloring and an M&M for the cherry on top.



Balancing Activity:
Let the kids stack rocks or wood chips to see if they can balance them. Then ask if they would dare yank the tooth of a Rink-Rinker-Fink, see if they can pull a rock out of the middle of the pile to see what happens.



Zoo Field Trip:
We went to the zoo today and I asked the kids the question from the book, “How much water can 55 elephants drink?” My son answered, “I don’t know, maybe 135 tanks. Then they use their trunks to give each other showers.” Ask your kids that question too the next time you visit the zoo.
