I’ve been busy the past few years celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day (March 2).  We actually celebrate all year long by making Dr. Seuss crafts, snacks, printable worksheets, activities and more. This may be why people call me obSEUSSed.

We love having Hop on Popcorn at our school Dr. Seuss carnival.
Try this fun Hop on Popcorn sight word game.
Really Hop on Pop when you draw him on a yellow bed sheet.

Creative Dr. Seuss Inspired Free Printables

Are you looking for some creative Dr. Seuss inspired free printables to celebrate Read Across America Day coming up March 2?

One of my favorites are these adorable Thing 1, Thing 2 paper bag puppet printable pieces from Nicole at Momentity.  Print them and have kids color and cut them out and glue them to a paper bag.

Green Eggs and Ham Egg Hunt

Green Eggs and Ham Hunt 

I am preparing for this egg hunt at school next month as part of our Dr. Seuss Carnival to celebrate our read-a-thon. The egg hunt is held in the library. 

Kids have to find two eggs that rhyme and may keep the prizes inside. We have Dr. Seuss erasers, pencil grippers, stickers and magnetic bookmarks. I ordered the prizes and a huge pack of Green Eggs from Oriental Trading Company. 

We used 8 rhyming words to match. Fox/Box, Tree/See, Sam/am, House/Mouse But you could try other words from the book. We only put one word per egg.

I tried another version for my kids at home where you put a word on top and a rhyming word on the bottom then have your kids match them up. 

This would be a fun activity for St. Patrick's Day in the classroom or at home.

Dr. Seuss Cake by Sweet Pea Cakes

I need to have a Dr. Seuss party just so I can order this cake.  I spotted this whimiscal, topsy turvy, style Dr. Seuss cake on Instagram and asked Susie if I could share it with all of you. She sent over the detailed photos and I am amazed by this masterpiece. I hope it will inspire you if you are looking for ideas to celebrate with a Dr. Seuss cake. I have seen quite a few Dr. Seuss cakes online and have a variety pinned on my Dr. Seuss Party and Cake Board, but this one is one of my favorites with all the details.

Green Eggs and Ham Snack Tray {DIY Craft}

Today's Craft: Create a fun snack tray with the Green Eggs and Ham book theme to celebrate Read Across America Day or St. Patrick’s Day in March.

Now, about the Green Eggs & Ham Snack Tray

My kids love having snacks after school so I made this tray for them to load up to take to the family room then return to the kitchen when finished.
This is our favorite book for St. Patrick’s day. And anytime I want to introduce a new food I remind them of this book. I tell them ‘you have to try it once, then decide.’

I remember when my son cracked 18 eggs all by himself while I was out of the kitchen, so we made green eggs and ham for dinner and breakfast.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Wooden craft tray, craft paints, paint sponge brushes, clear sealer craft paint, smaller paint brush, permanent marker, book page image, stickers.

I had a wooden tray from a craft store sitting in my closet for years and didn’t know what to do with it. I also had an extra copy of the book ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ by Dr. Seuss that was falling apart so I cut out an image to use for this craft. My kids helped paint the over all orange and green color.

HOW TO:

• Use craft paint to paint inside and outside of tray – choose bright colors
  
• Use a pencil to trace the bottom of a cup and a plate in the spots you choose. Click on the image to make it larger to see the drawing.
  
• Also draw utensils and a napkin if you’d like them.
  
• Glue the image from the book on so it will have time to dry.

• Paint the images on the tray with different colored craft paint.
  
• Let dry at least 30 minutes. Outline the images with a sharpie permanent marker.

• Let the paint and marker completely dry then seal with a clear coat of craft paint. Let it dry before using.
  
• I found green fuzzy stickers in the clearance bin and they matched perfectly for this craft. I stuck them on the side of the tray.  If you have a vinyl cutting machine you could print out words or some of these images with vinyl to stick on the tray.
I found the figurine of Sam I Am at a yard sale in the box for $8. It is a retired piece from Halmark. I added him for display only.

Do you like Green Eggs and Ham? Video Contest

Did you know Dr. Seuss' publisher bet him $50 that he couldn't write a book using only 50 words?  He won the bet by writing Green Eggs and Ham. All the words have only 1 syllable except one (leave me a comment if you know the 3 syllable word).

Random House is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dr. Seuss' book Green Eggs & Ham by having a contest. Create a video depicting part of the book and you could win $2,000 or other fabulous prizes. The contest runs through Oct. and voting begins in Nov. I'm not sure if I have enough time to put a video together but I want to let others know about it and I'd love to see what people come up with. Making Green Eggs and Ham

One day I was talking with friends in the living room while 'Conrad', age 3, went to the kitchen to get a snack. His dad had just taught him how to crack eggs while making a cake earlier in the week. Little did I know he decided to practice cracking eggs by himself....All 18 eggs, perfectly cracked, no shells, into a storage container. It was overflowing when I found him. Guess what we had for dinner that night (and breakfast the next day)? Of course...Green Eggs & Ham. Make your own:

Recipe: Green Eggs and Ham

Ingredients:

1/2 c. Spinach

1 c. Ham

6 Eggs (or however many you normally scramble for your family)

1/4 c. Milk

1. Finely chop spinach leaves (or defrost frozen spinach then shred it in the food processor.)

2. Cube ham into pea size pieces. (Ask the deli to cut thick slices then you can cube it quickly.)

3. Mix the spinach and chopped up ham with the eggs and some milk, mix it all up- 'Scrambled Eggs Super' style then scramble in a fry pan on medium heat. Seussalicious!

*A personal side note: I refused to eat scrambled eggs while growing up (until I finally tried them again in college) because my school teacher aunt forced me to eat green eggs and ham once as a fun Dr. Seuss activity when I was 6 years old.  "Try them, try them, you will see." Please don't force your kids to eat. Make things creative, like Sam I Am and wait for them to try it.
