I’ve been busy the past few years celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day (March 2).  We actually celebrate all year long by making Dr. Seuss crafts, snacks, printable worksheets, activities and more. This may be why people call me obSEUSSed.

These are a few of my favorite projects I've created.  You can see more details when clicking the links below each collage.

Sunday, February 24, 2013

I’m featuring some sweet Dr. Seuss baby shower party ideas today that have been shared on the Dr. Seuss link collection. These ideas would be great at any Dr. Seuss party.
This one is from Amy who blogs at Labor of Love. She helped create this Dr. Seuss baby shower for her cousin.

I love the bright colors on the cupcakes and the cake pops.  Just setting up Dr. Seuss books around the room makes a great decoration too. I first saw her post a picture on instagram then she posted it on her blog. You can see more details here: Labor of Love

Twin Thing 1 Thing 2 Dr. Seuss Birthday Party

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

A perfect theme party idea for twins is Dr. Seuss’ Thing one and Thing two, from the book 'The Cat in the Hat'. There are  so many fabulous things you can do.

Nicole has twins so she naturally wanted to host a Thing 1 and Thing 2 Birthday party for them. Today I’m featuring a few ideas from her party that I noticed online a few months ago. You can see more details on her blog, My Everything Else.  Thanks to Nicole for sharing her party with us!

Let’s start with these whimsical smash cakes. They look like the Thing’s hair and I love the base wrapped in polka-dot paper.

She also made these striped Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat Cake Pops to look like the cat’s hat.

She printed Thing 1, Thing 2 labels from obSEUSSed. The picture cupcake toppers and invitations were ordered from Photodesignz on Etsy.

Try making some Sweet Seuss treats like turquoise popcorn balls or swedish fish in a bowl. You could also have a contest to guess how many fish are in the bowl and the winner takes home the bowl as their prize.

Dr. Seuss Party Favors: Make your own labels for bubbles. I love all the red and white polka-dots, stripes and turquoise or blue mixed in with all the decorations and accents for this party.

Nicole also guest posted on ObSEUSSed how to make these adorable Thing 1 and Thing 2 puppets with free printable faces.

Hamburger Cupcakes and Books

Thursday, April 28, 2011

We made these fun hamburger cupcakes for my daughter's Sock Hop Birthday Party.
Items Needed:
Yellow cake mix
Brownie cake mix
White frosting in a can (vanilla or cream cheese)
Yellow food coloring
Red frosting (buy this at the store, too hard to make this color at home)
Shredded Coconut
Green Food coloring
Sesame Seeds (found near the spice jars at the store)

How to make Hamburger Cupcakes:
  1. Use yellow cake mix to bake cupcakes in liners as directed by box mix. Once cool, remove from wrapper then cut just under the muffin top to create 2 separate pieces of the hamburger buns. (If cupcakes are tall you may wish to remove 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the middle.)
  2. Make brownies from a box mix, once cool cut into 2 inch squares and round edges to look like hamburger patty. Place on the bottom portion of the cupcake.
  3. Use the can of white frosting. Add 4-6 drops of yellow food coloring and mix with spoon to change color. Spoon 5 Tbsp into a zip plastic bag and cut a small tip off one bottom corner.  Squeeze the frosting slowly and pipe it in waves around the edges of the brownie.
  4. Pipe the Red frosting in waves around the edges of the brownie.
  5. Place 3/4 cup of shredded coconut into a zip plastic bag and 3 drops of food coloring inside.  Zip bag then shake until coconut turns green. Sprinkle around edges of brownie.
  6. Place the top of the cupcake/bun. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top as desired.

Hamburger Stories:

The Best story to read when you make these treats is The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Burger.
See the whole story/poem and printable on Marcia's Lesson Plans. Open the file for a word document.
Check out this cute interactive flannel board set on etsy.
You can also see someone do a video of the story on YouTube.

City of Hamburgers by Mike Reiss (a writer/producer of 'The Simpsons')

Description: "Jeffery is tired of the same old fairy tales and wants to hear about Grandma's life growing up in the old country as a Hamburger. Imagination, as well as ketchup and mustard, flow through this delightfully quirky book."
This book uses humor to share a story about multicultural differences. Fun for children and adults to read together and discuss.

10th day of Christmas Books: Fancy Festivities

Thursday, December 23, 2010

Celebrating The Twelve Days of Christmas Books

On the 10th day of Christmas Books, obSEUSSed gave to me
10 Fancy Festivities

If you haven't heard of Fancy Nancy by now you must either live under a rock, or you don't have a little girl in your house.  The children's book character, Fancy Nancy, loves to turn the ordinary into extraordinary.

Here we are at our local library storytime Fancy Nancy Party.  They made fancy masks, gave everyone a bling necklace, had fancy cookies and lemonade in tea cups, had the girls do a fashion walk down a red carpet and dance to fancy music on the stage.
Make sure to add glitter and bling to your holiday decorations and festivities this season just like Fancy Nancy's Splendiferous Christmas.  Nancy says splendiferous is the only word that "describes how magnificent, joyous and sparkly Christmas morning is."  She wants Christmas to be fancy with a special tree topper but when things go wrong her grandpa teaches her how to "make eggnog out of broken eggs."

Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas

The Fancy Nancy book series by Jane O'Conner, illustrated by Robin Glasser, helps introduce new 'fancy' vocabulary to young readers. My 7 yr old and I have loved this series for 4 years. The original hard backs are a little hard for her to read because the font is too fancy but all the easy reader books have been perfect for her.

The Fancy Nancy collection seems to be growing every month with new books popping up every time I go to the store. We are adding Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique, The Delectable Cupcake and My Family History to our home library this Christmas.

We bought the cupcake one from our school book fair the fashion boutique from Amazon online after Thanksgiving and the Family History one from our local Barnes and Nobel. I've also seen them in our Scholastic book order, at Target and Wal-mart - I told you they are everywhere.

I'm so excited for the family history one because our family does a lot of research and it introduces some great vocab for young readers, like 'ancestors'.

I am also excited for 'The Delectable Cupcake' as I am crazy about cupcakes, see the Cupcake Conference.

Wishing you a Spendiferous Christmas!

Halloween Life-Size Jack Skellington

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Our favorite Halloween decoration we've made is this life-size Jack Skellington from Disney & Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.  My husband cut PVC pipes to make his skinny frame and I found fabric to sew for his suit and face. I cut black felt for his face and used foam paper and white-out to make the bat tie, then we added gloves for his hands.  To make it even spookier, we sat him at our Player Piano and turned on the Halloween Music so it looks like Jack is reallly playing the piano. We set him in our big picture window so the kids and parents can see him as they walk up the porch to Trick-or-treat. The little kids are so amazed that Jack is playing the piano all by himself.

From Disney.com
Last year they came out with a Christmas book about the movie story. The Nightmare Before Christmas. In case your not familiar with the story it is about Jack Skellington who lives in Halloween land, but he finds out about Santa Claus and wants to take his place and leave spooky gifts for children because he wants to bring them Halloween cheer but things don't work out very well. Our kids, ages 7 & 5, love it but younger kids might be scared so use your judgement before introducing it to them.
