Dr. Seuss Crafts, Activities and Party ideas by obSEUSSed

I’ve been busy the past few years celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America Day (March 2).  We actually celebrate all year long by making Dr. Seuss crafts, snacks, printable worksheets, activities and more. This may be why people call me obSEUSSed.

HOP ON POP
We love having Hop on Popcorn at our school Dr. Seuss carnival.
Try this fun Hop on Popcorn sight word game.
Really Hop on Pop when you draw him on a yellow bed sheet.
The Cat in the Hat storage container also makes a great Valentine box.

Twin Thing 1 Thing 2 Dr. Seuss Birthday Party

A perfect theme party idea for twins is Dr. Seuss’ Thing one and Thing two, from the book 'The Cat in the Hat'. There are  so many fabulous things you can do.

Nicole has twins so she naturally wanted to host a Thing 1 and Thing 2 Birthday party for them. Today I’m featuring a few ideas from her party that I noticed online a few months ago. You can see more details on her blog, My Everything Else.  Thanks to Nicole for sharing her party with us!

Let’s start with these whimsical smash cakes. They look like the Thing’s hair and I love the base wrapped in polka-dot paper.


She also made these striped Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat Cake Pops to look like the cat’s hat.


She printed Thing 1, Thing 2 labels from obSEUSSed. The picture cupcake toppers and invitations were ordered from Photodesignz on Etsy.


Try making some Sweet Seuss treats like turquoise popcorn balls or swedish fish in a bowl. You could also have a contest to guess how many fish are in the bowl and the winner takes home the bowl as their prize.


Dr. Seuss Party Favors: Make your own labels for bubbles. I love all the red and white polka-dots, stripes and turquoise or blue mixed in with all the decorations and accents for this party.

Reading Marathon, PBS Kids Party in Utah

Back in December we read books and tracked them on a form to be eligible to attend this amazing PBS Kids party put on by our local TV channel, KUED Kids.  The annual party was held in January and we can’t wait to do it again next year.
I've heard of these parties in many states so check your local PBS station to find out what events they have.

At the Reading Marathon:
We met the Cat in the Hat.

We also met Curious George, Buddy (from The Dinosaur Train), Martha Speaks, and Sid the Science Kid.

They had so many booths it took up two floors of this huge building.  They had Japanese Drummers perform, a magician and fun experiments from a science lab.

They had craft stations all over.  Our kids enjoyed (1) Getting to pick a free book (2) making sentences with magnetic words at the Cat in the Hat station (3) painting a “Word Girl” cape (4) using foam letter beads to make a “Word World” worm (5) making an “Electric Company” kaleidoscope (6) going in the mini planetarium for the ‘Zula Patrol”

All Aboard the Dinosaur Train

The kids dug through wood chips to find dinosaur eggs or plastic toys.

They watched an ice sculpture be made of the Cat in the Hat.

We’ll keep reading and track our minutes this coming December so we can attend again next January.

Seusstastic Saturday Dr. Seuss Play House Playroom and Baby Shower

I came across this whimsical Dr. Seuss play room with a custom DIY play house. Then I realized the same person did this incredible Dr. Seuss baby shower. Jill is the creative mastermind behind all this Dr. Seuss themed decor. More of her ideas can be seen on her blog The Bird and the Berry. I'm featuring a few of my favorite pieces here.
She found a play house at Pottery Barn that inspired her to make her own Dr. Seuss version.

This looks magnificent and I'm sure kids will love playing in it.

I love the white furniture with all the bright colors. Jill plans to do some custom murals, artwork and a Dr. Seuss lamp that she will blog about in the coming months.

We love those bags from Target. She turned button pins into magnets.

Her Dr. Seuss baby shower has very festive decorations, treats and games.

Custom invitations and cupcakes.  The red dots are for guests to write advice on, then put in the hat. The Marvin K. Mooney hand tells us we "should go now" to the food.

I went to a Cookie exchange party hosted by the gracious Jen of Tatertots and Jello. Of course I wanted to make something festive so I made Mount Crumpit Melt-a-ways.  This is a melt-a-way butter cookie recipe from my husband's family, I just re-named it. And, I'll admit, my husband baked the cookies. His family are the best bakers. I did make the frosting, only after calling him for advice while in the process. It really isn't very hard, I'm just not the best cook.  They taste delicious and Melt in your mouth, thus the name.
